As drought conditions worsen across the Western United States, some of the world’s largest technology companies—Apple, Google, and Microsoft—are taking action to reduce their environmental footprint. In a rare joint announcement, the tech giants revealed a bold new initiative to dramatically cut water consumption across their sprawling data center operations, which are known for their intensive cooling needs.
Among the proposed solutions are advanced cooling systems that repurpose greywater—used water from sinks, showers, and other non-sewage systems—to minimize reliance on potable water. These systems are designed to significantly reduce evaporation and waste, making them especially effective in arid environments. Additionally, the companies are redesigning their corporate campuses with low-impact landscaping that features drought-resistant native plants, artificial turf, and drip irrigation to conserve every drop.
To further offset their water usage, the trio of firms has pledged substantial investments in environmental restoration projects. These include funding the replenishment of natural aquifers, supporting watershed rehabilitation, and backing water-rights programs in affected states.
