An AI response can match your JSON schema and still describe the wrong event. Structured output helps software consume a response predictably. It does not independently establish that the response is true.
Separate shape from meaning
A schema can require a title, date and source URL. That makes missing fields easier to detect. It cannot, by itself, prove that the date belongs to the event or that the linked page supports the title.
Allow uncertainty explicitly
When evidence is missing, a required date field can encourage an application to accept an unsuitable value. Design the data contract to permit an unknown state where appropriate. Distinguish event date from announcement date, and keep a field explaining the evidence rather than silently substituting one date for another.
Add application checks
Validate lengths, allowed categories and date formats in code. Then check facts against the source. For a news pipeline, verify that each citation exists, that the quoted support is relevant, and that a proposed policy has not been labeled as enacted. These are different checks from JSON parsing.
Plan for nonstandard responses
Inspect the current API documentation for refusals, interrupted generations and supported schema features. Do not assume every request ends with the business object your application wanted. Route failures to a visible review queue instead of publishing partially populated records.
Choose the right interface
OpenAI distinguishes structured responses from function calling: the latter is relevant when connecting a model to tools or functions. Either way, tool execution needs its own authorization and input validation. A well-formed instruction is not permission to carry it out.
A sensible launch test includes supported examples, ambiguous sources and incomplete inputs. Review both the parsed output and the reader-facing result before trusting the workflow.
